![]() ![]() Well, that's how I interpreted the events anyway. Probably tie in the chessboard as a metaphor here too. But as we know, he was only permitted to be killed in the first place when he gave in so the party was always going to win. Also the book ends with Winston gaining Victory over himself because he considered dying while hating the party a 'win' and he lost this battle by dying while loving BB, so the party won. The 3 men end up being executed and vaporised, therefore it makes sense that the same happens to Winston. I don't think it's coincidental that Orwell explicitly mentions that the men cried (and pointed out their broken noses from the torture) and Winston also cries after hearing a song at the bar in the final moments of the book. ![]() Both the 3 men and Winston are emotionless bots at this point, but in the cafe they all visibly shed a tear. They then get released back into society and proceed to waste away in the chestnut tree bar until they fully embrace the party. He, like them, gets in trouble with the thought police who then make them 'disappear' for a year or so (this is when they get tortured). We can assume he dies because of the 3 traitors mentioned earlier in the book – Winston becomes these guys in a sense. So he was always destined to die, but it would ONLY happen when he gave in and accepted the regime, which happens at the end of the book. O'Brien and Winston had a whole dialogue about how if they're just going to be killed, then why bother with the torture and O'Brien says it's because they want you to die 'pure/pro-party' or whatever. I disagree, I think Winston physically died too. Example: Hello.Įxplanation of our link flairs Join our /r/bookclub Don't forget /new!
